INSIGHT ON: The invitation
INSIGHTFUL RESOURCES by Candice Brokenshire
A new perspective on cool tools to boost your coaching business.
I have just returned from the Organizational Development Network Conference where the many educational sessions were defined in the following categories (a) Facilitating Change (b) Building Key Skills (c) Pushing the envelope (d) Strengthening Organizations through Diversity and (e) Expanding Leadership Capacity. Language sound familiar?
At the upcoming International Coach Federation conference Nov 12 – 15, the educational breakouts will be defined under (a) Coaching and Leadership (b) Coaching and Organizations (b) Science and Coaching (c) Mind, Body, Spirit Connections (d) Impact in the World (e) Wisdom Circles for Core Competencies and (f) Wisdom Circles for Marketing, branding and building your own business.
I left the ODN conference knowing that even though OD professionals and coaches may speak a different process language we have the same core views and vocabulary of how our work can impact people and organizations, and although ODN are inviting more coaches to take a seat at their table I definitely still felt in the minority and began to wonder about the power of having equal numbers of OD practitioners and coaches at the same conference. What discussions might occur and what might the possibilities be?
In pondering the opportunity I began to reflect on a programs meeting we had back in December where our own Chapter President Doug Gfeller tabled what was to become our 2008 theme of ‘Strategic Alliances’. We ate it up and scheduled Doug to be our January speaker to convey the value of creating such alliances. Even today I choose to believe that it is more than a theme; it’s an invitation.
Now knowing that many of you are indeed heading for the conference in Montreal I am wondering if you will take that invitation with you. What strategic alliances are you intending to make, what is it that you would like to create? And on your return what will you bring back?
For those of you who are staying local what might your Strategic Alliance intentions be for the remainder of the year? Who might you be extending the invitation to?
POINTERS:
- Make alliances a way of being and you will create a pool of people to work and play with
– Set intentions and create dialogue
– Be curious about ‘those over there’, you may think similarly and complement one another in skill set; together magic could happen
