A new perspective on cool tools to boost your coaching business

INSIGHT ON: Broadening your offer

Ask most coaches about the key to a successful business and you will often hear the sage advice ‘find your niche’. Wise words; identify a target audience that you are passionate about, are able to support and build a business around. However, if you have niche recognition and have been associated with that niche for a while, or your particular niche is currently ignoring your value in this economic environment you may be wanting to spread your wings and look for business elsewhere and the question to ask might be ‘How elastic is your brand?’

It is an interesting thing to consider, the risk being dilution of product and credibility, while the benefits of having an alternative revenue stream speak for themselves.  This month I have noticed a few brands trying out a few new things; Pottery Barn is expanding their brand and reputation as furniture retailer by broadening their offer to encompass a lifestyle product range via a new comprehensive range of luggage. AT&T have also audited at their offer and are now buying land lines from Verizon so they can not only provide our wireless needs but be of service in our homes too, bundling the services into one tidy monthly invoice.

So what do you and your coaching brand stand for? What are you very good at? What other services and products can you begin to add to your brand that will resonate with your existing market and also attract new folks to get interested and purchase?

Glenn Stevenson, Ph.D.ASSESSMENT 101
by Glenn Stevenson
http://www.myselfsense.com

Over the last information-packed year, an article on assessments has appeared each month in Insights.  I thank the devoted readers who have followed this series, as I bring it to completion this month.  We finish with the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI), which businesses, educators, and organizational development professionals have used for over 30 years to assess and handle conflict in organizations.

This is the twelfth article in the Insights series on assessments.  For an index of assessments previously reviewed, see the end of this article.

Assessment:  Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI)

Description:   The Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument assesses how people deal with conflict and how to get collaboration.  The TKI is an assessment tool for understanding how different conflict-handling modes, or styles, affect interpersonal and group dynamics.  It also promotes learning how to select the most appropriate style for a given situation.

The TKI model states that there are two dimensions along which a person behaves in conflicted situations:  assertiveness (representing one’s own interests) and cooperativeness (considering the other person’s interests).  Using these two dimensions, the TKI defines five conflict-handling styles:

Competing – assertive and uncooperative
Collaborating – assertive and cooperative
Compromising - intermediate in both assertiveness and cooperativeness
Avoiding – unassertive and uncooperative
Accommodating – unassertive and cooperative

The TKI consists of 30 statement pairs from which participants select a response.  Scoring the instrument results in a rank ordering of a person’s five conflict-handling styles.

The TKI offers a situational approach to conflict resolution, demonstrating how and when to use the five conflict-handling styles effectively.  Its purpose is to initiate safe and productive dialogue to resolve conflict.

Ning.com: Utilizing the “Do-It-Yourself” Social Network

www.Ning.com is a Social Networking site like no other – in the click of a few buttons you can create your very own “Facebook” or “Myspace”. But, why would you want to do this? Isn’t there enough Social Networking websites out there that you don’t need to jump-in and start creating new ones? Apparently not! According to Ning.com, there are approximately 50,000 “popular” Ning websites – ranging from Skydiving (http://www.skydivernetwork.org/), fans and followers of WD-40 (http://wd40.powerblocktv.com/), and about 500 Ning sites with the keyword “Life Coach”! By the end of the year, Ning estimates to have over 150,000 social networks run by people and businesses just like you and me.

So, how do you stand-out among this haystack? In order for your Ning website to be a popular hang-out, you need to know the ambition and marketing behind it – just like when you want to promote a product or service you need to have the marketing tools behind it to make it work.

Explore. But, first, let’s explore what Ning is. According to their website, “Ning offers the latest social networking features, all infinitely customizable to meet your unique needs.” Have you been on Facebook, MySpace, or LinkedIn lately? If not, perhaps this is where you should start before building your own Social Network, because a lot of the same features are available. However, there is one big difference: as the owner, you can control the culture of your Social Network. The current social networks you might be a part of now are not customizable, and although you have control over your own profile and groups you create, you do not have control over the look and feel of the website – and this is where Ning comes in handy. Just take a look at the WD-40 Ning website (http://wd40.powerblocktv.com/) vs. Voice My Biz (http://www.voicemybiz.com) a Ning site for Southern OC small businesses. The design is custom, the advertising is controlled by the owners of the website, the Ning logo is taken off, the domain name is the owner’s, and much more. You can have your own forum, videos, audios, photos, and even allow your members to have their own blog! You also have the ability to control who can find your website, and if they need approval before they can join. To view a complete list of options available, click here: http://about.ning.com/product.php
