Body Talk! featuring Heather Wieshlow

In ten to fifteen seconds of meeting someone, you will make an impression that can influence present and future interactions. Research indicates that in this short period of time, it is not the words you say but specifically the non-verbal communication clues you express. People watch for movement, gestures, touch, spatial boundaries and your vocal nuances to decide if they can trust and believe your message and delivery to be congruent. Our ability to communicate effectively can be hindered by a lack of awareness, cultural or family conditioning, life-long beliefs or even habitual patterns.

In this interactive session gain greater mastery and awareness of the key factors that influence your non-verbal communication. Become adept at reading the subtle clues that are often missed when speaking with others. Participants will have an opportunity to receive personalized feedback in a fun and supportive group atmosphere which will provide tremendous insights in your personal and professional endeavors.

  • Understand the importance of the four key areas of non-verbal communication.
  • Respond with nonverbal cues that reflect emotional understanding and builds trust with others.
  • Learn how to connect with your truth and congruently express your authentic message.
  • Discover ways to use intuition and metaphor to interpret non-verbal communication.
  • Recognize how to interpret non-verbal communication clues with yourself and in observing others.

Lessons of Improv during Turbulent Times with Greg Atkins

Change is inevitable. Coaches can help clients through turbulent times in their personal and professional lives. It is challenging when clients are unable to access inner wisdom and see past their limiting filters. The latest methods are not effective. The interactive art form of improvisation teaches the client to focus and bring awareness "into the present moment.” This art form provides an experiential fusion of "awareness" that allows the client to explore alternative actions for personal and professional growth.

This presentation can help coaches, consultants, business leaders and clients respond effectively to change. Be prepared for a highly interactive and memorable evening filled with laughter and learning.

1. Understand the rules of Improv and how they link to the key principles of successful coaching.
2. Learn how to manage change in a dynamic and proactive manner.
3. Discover techniques that break down the barriers of conventional corporate thinking that will improve communication and collaboration.
4. Increase your ability to creatively solve problems and explore new possibilities.
5. Through experiential techniques learn how to integrate an improvisational mindset between you and your clients.

About the Presenter:

Greg AdkinsGreg Adkins is a writer, director, teacher, playwright and author of IMPROV! which is in its 15th printing. He is a popular teacher of Improv classes at South Coast Repertory and was also a creative consultant for the hit ABC primetime show, Whose Line is it Anyway? Greg’s wide range of accomplishments and experience make him a highly sought after speaker in both the business and theater worlds.

Greg has written and directed the television pilot The Everyday Adventures of Hannah Handleman (Super Genius) and worked for the Entertainment Department of the Walt Disney Company.

INSIGHT ON: The invitation

I have just returned from the Organizational Development Network Conference where the many educational sessions were defined in the following categories (a) Facilitating Change (b) Building Key Skills (c) Pushing the envelope (d) Strengthening Organizations through Diversity and (e) Expanding Leadership Capacity. Language sound familiar?

At the upcoming International Coach Federation conference Nov 12 – 15, the educational breakouts will be defined under (a) Coaching and Leadership (b) Coaching and Organizations (b) Science and Coaching (c) Mind, Body, Spirit Connections (d) Impact in the World (e) Wisdom Circles for Core Competencies and (f) Wisdom Circles for Marketing, branding and building your own business.

I left the ODN conference knowing that even though OD professionals and coaches may speak a different process language we have the same core views and vocabulary of how our work can impact people and organizations, and although ODN are inviting more coaches to take a seat at their table I definitely still felt in the minority and began to wonder about the power of having equal numbers of OD practitioners and coaches at the same conference. What discussions might occur and what might the possibilities be?

1. How did you get started as a life coach?

The original focus for my business was (and still is) HR Effectiveness, that is, understanding how human capital can affect the bottom line of any organization. Over time the practice has received more and more requests to do executive and leadership coaching, including acting as keynote speaker for conferences and panel discussions.

2. Do you have a specialty area?

I focus on organizational coaching especially as it relates to leadership and management development. We have such a wide gap between the need and supply of leaders globally that it is by some accounts a crisis. My entire professional career has been helping professionals succeed at what they do. That’s also why I wrote my book titled ‘The ABCs of Leadership’.

3. How do you know when you've 'arrived' as a coach?

This question is pretty easy…you know you’ve arrived when you’re at the end of your life’s journey. There is and will always be work that needs to be done including your own development. Once you’ve conquered one demon or development opportunity another one is right there challenging you to be your very best…again.

4. How would a good friend describe you?

*Compassionate, Approachable, Energetic, Empathetic, Visionary, Develops others, Philanthropist, Communicator, Ethical Patient physically and spiritually in the “third age” of their lives.

Beth Griffith

It’s getting close to Thanksgiving and I have a story to share.  My friend Angela is in the Peace Corps and currently works in a small rural town in Turkmenistan.  The other day she wrote me about purchasing a 16 pound turkey for a family meal and that it was difficult for her to carry it home.  When she reached her destination she placed the turkey in a pen with another turkey her host family owned.  The turkeys began to fight.  It took me until that part of the story to realize she was talking about a live turkey.  I naturally thought she had purchased one at the grocery store.  It’s all perspective, isn’t it?

I hope Insights has brought you new perspectives in how to work with your clients and live more empowering lives personally and as coaches this past year.  Wait till you see what Candice has in store for you next year – you won’t be disappointed!
